Story of My Life: Coming Full Circle

Today I got up quite early, at least early for me these last few months, put on scrubs, packed a lunch and headed out to begin training at an imaging center.  I realized a few things today which were quite nice, one was that it felt really good to be back in scrubs and working with people in healthcare.  I realized that I really do enjoy that field and in a way that recognition was another piece of redemption for the time, energy, and money that I poured into the several years of intensive school and work to gain access to what I’m doing now.  Especially since I’ve been removed from it for a while.  There is a sense of excitement in my heart, both about this opportunity and life in general.  Something is happening.  Somewhere there is movement and it’s spreading.  Seeds that were planted, even a few years ago, whose fruit I may have tasted in past seasons, are proving to be perennials and continue to bear fruit year after year.  I am also seeing how giving certain fields a rest for a year or two can make the work to cultivate them again sweeter by the slight mystery and challenge that are entwined with the familiarity. There is a sense of coming full circle, if only for the fact that some of this ground is familiar, pulling out old things and seeing how they fit now, pitching what doesn’t work and embracing what does…ah yes, welcome to spring.

After work I hurried home and did a few things before running out with Sarah Bryan to plan the next few weeks of the Bright Ideas Collective.  There was the most amazing sky show as we were driving.  I love the fact that we’re getting our golden hour and brilliant sunsets back!

We have some exciting and intense things coming up in the next few weeks.  It’s amazing to see how much we learn and experience while writing this material.  We are challenging ourselves to grow and learn by digging into these creativity expanding and enriching activities and discussions.  The very act of creating enlarges your ability to create.  There’s so much to be found in the doing.

Story of My Life: A Walk to Underdog Park

Despite sounding like the cover track for an emo album, that title does not refer to a moment of severe depression, in fact it is quite the opposite!  I was sitting at my kitchen table after lunch working on my computer and through the window I saw my friend Calun walking by pushing a double stroller with arms and legs belonging to Judah & Annabelle sticking out from all sides.  I knew the weather was gorgeous but I was resisting going outside on the premise of needing to get work done, which can be a good reason or a good excuse depending on the context.  Today it was an excuse.  I was faking it by keeping my windows open.  I stepped out the back door to say hi to Calun and after a few minutes was very enthusiastically invited by Judah to walk to “underdog park” with them.  I couldn’t resist such a charming invitation.  The park is aptly named due to the swings where Judah typically receives repeated “underdogs.”  If you don’t know what that is, ask the nearest 4-5 year old.  :)   I had a lovely time with them as always and now I’m back at my desk blogging and editing away.  Enjoy!

Judah, in full boy fashion, had to spit in every grate and hole and touch every dried up earthworm we passed.

Annabelle has an amazing smile and an equally amazing CHEESE face!  She doesn’t say cheese, but who needs words with a grin like that?

They were ready to leave before we were…

Judah kept calling me Miss R’kell (my roomie Raquelle) and then looking at his mom with this “hehe help me” grin when I’d ask him what my name was.  He’d then make that thinking face – next shot – and then repeat the question he’d asked with Miss Em’ly attached.  :)

That is the ultimate in toddler comfort right there, reclined stroller seat, passie, blanket, and sunshine on your face.

Story of My Life: Spring Forward

The last two days have been so fun!  I feel like something has been reawakening in me that I haven’t felt since I’ve lived in Charlotte.  Spring is coming, or perhaps it has already come!  Last night I spent several hours with my friend Caitlin practicing to lead worship for our women’s ministry at M* tonight.  I led worship there once previously, in January last year.  Caitlin brought her keyboard over and we set up in my garage because my roomie was watching a movie and it seemed like the best place to be mutually undistracting.  :)   Of course we immediately felt like a legit band simply by virtue of the fact that we were playing in a garage haha!  We played for a couple of hours, practicing the songs for tonight and then branching off into showing each other some of our original songs and wending our way into an kick butt arrangement of Edelweiss (think Ingrid Michaelson meets the Sound of Music).

When music is inside of you, getting to sit and play with someone, sing harmonies together, hear them harmonize with your songs, jam and sing for the joy of it as well as for a purpose is so…amazing, refreshing, exciting, and awakening!  It’s been so long since I’ve really done that intentionally.  It is so interesting to see how things go in cycles, you reach a point where you have to let them go and trust that if they’re meant to be part of your life they will come back again.  I feel like music and I have an on-again-off-again relationship as far as public opportunities go, but I’ve tried to never stop playing and writing, if only for the fact that music is a primary way that I express myself and de-stress.  I know that in any creative arena, the more you do it (whatever “it” is for you) the better you’re going to get.  If you sit around waiting for opportunities to do it for or with people then you’re never going to improve because you’ll always start from square one, whereas if you’re constantly seeking to grow every opportunity take you up a level on the foundation you’ve already built.  That’s a big reason why I do this blog.  I read a blog post by a photographer who I respect who said that if you’re only taking pictures when you’re getting paid you’re an idiot.  So I decided to try to take at least one picture every day on my SLR, to capture my life as I’m living, but also to practice mastering light and manual settings and the art of communicating what I see with my eye onto my camera’s sensor.  All of the pictures for today were taken on my phone, but at least I took some!  In actuality, as opposed to most days, they were taken yesterday.  But I already posted for yesterday and I spent time with the same people today doing virtually the same things so I decided they could count!  I also had a coffee date yesterday at Rush Espresso (with their incredible new Lavazza coffee, omg it’s amazingly smooth and delicious!) with my friend and creative co-conspirator Sarah Bryan and then I had lunch with her today after church – Brunch 2.0.  :)

Doesn’t she look like a brilliant artist with that lovely scarf, her hair pulled back, and The Portrait of Dorian Gray casually resting on the table?

Overall it was a good day, even with losing an hour of sleep to the time change.  Somehow it feels like something has really shifted and we are now in something new.  I’m excited to see what this new season brings with it!!  Caitlin and I are going to try to continue to get together and play regularly, we’re going to be intentional about it.  What are the things that you are or want to be intentional with cultivating even though you might not have opportunities to express them publicly?  Now is the time!

Story of My Life: Brunch

Today I set my alarm, but for the latest time I could decently wake up, in hopes of catching up on some sleep.  However, a shrill barking from the neighbor’s new dog woke me up quite early haha!  So much for that!  Gotta love neighbor’s dogs in the squashed suburbia where I live.  I actually do love having neighbors, especially ones that I am friends with.  I love the fact that we live in a neighborhood that is full of people who are part of our church community!  It makes it so fun to take walks or drive around.  I’m usually surprised when I see people walking or running by that I don’t know haha!  The last few days I’ve been exchanging text messages with one of our newer neighbors, a sweet woman named Lisa, about borrowing her rolling pin.  This is where having friendly neighbors comes in super handy!  ;)   Yesterday I walked around the block (the long way) and then stopped by Lisa’s house to pick up the rolling pin.  We chatted for a moment and she pointed out that it could make a good security system (you could really do some damage with a rolling pin) as well as a good way to flatten dough.  Evil intenders beware! I’m armed and dangerous!  This morning I got up having finally (with the acquisition of the rolling pin) gathered all of the materials to make a biscuit mix that Joe & Meg gave me when I was in Cinci a couple of weeks ago.  It called for both heavy cream and half and half, both dairy products that I do not regularly keep on hand.  I purchased little baby containers of them at the store over the last two weeks and at last, it’s biscuit time!

The box had a recipe for cinnamon rolls as well as biscuits so I split the dough and made half biscuits and half cinnamon rolls!  I’m excited to see how they turn out! :)

Someone gave me some yummy venison sausage last week, far less gamey than most venison I’ve had before, and I fried those up too.  Brunch is on!

The biscuits weren’t the best ones I’d ever had in my entire life but they were good!  Better than I would have expected.  :)   I had a skype date with my youngest brother Ari set for 11:30 or twelve and I finished cooking right when he was ready to get on so we ate together, while being in different states.  I had a delicious meal and good company!

Cinnamon rolls just came out of the oven right as I finished this!  They sure look good! :)

Story of My Life: Shaddow Play

Have you ever noticed the way a shadow can make something look much larger than it actually is, or add another dimension of depth?  Or the texture that a shadow from one object can layer over another object?  I’ve been a bit fascinated by shadows recently and trying to capture them in a way that shows how interesting they are. Today I was searching for something, anything, the least bit interesting to take a picture of, or a way to portray a homebody laundry day as something that someone else would want to look at.

I was so excited when my roomie Raquelle popped in the side door to the laundry room and started chatting with me.  The shadow from the blinds across her face was so extraordinary!  If I allowed myself to live with regrets, the moments I would wish to change are not the ones where I stepped out but rather the ones where I allowed a lack of boldness or a fear of asking hold me back.  This was not going to be one of those times.  :)

Appreciating and noticing moments like this are what make my life amazing.  Creativity is not just the ability to capture, but the ability to see.

Story of My Life: Journey Map

Tonight our Bright Ideas Collective met for the 3rd official time!  It’s been so exciting to launch this journey with these amazing women.  The short version of the story behind B.I. started when my friend Sarah and I went through the Artist Way with several of our other friends.  We learned a ton about ourselves and each other, we were unlocked creatively, and the relationships alone that came out of that group were worth the 12 week investment.  We’re actually still meeting and doing fun creative things about once a month.  While doing the Artist Way I incorporated a bunch of my own creative exercises that I either made up or found since Julia Cameron provides a lot of written tasks but not many hands on group activities.  After the Artist Way group concluded (with a fabulous party) and the holiday rush was over I was thinking of doing another group and still utilizing the Artist Way but also incorporating more of my own material with the goal being to eventually have my own complete course.  For several reasons, and with the strong encouragement of some dear and trusted artist friends of ours, Sarah and I decided to write our own curriculum using the Artist Way as reference but with the majority of the material being our own.  For the last month or so Sarah and I have been meeting at least once a week to write and compile material and then once a week with the women in the group.  We’ve managed to stay about two weeks ahead of the group at all times and so far it has been an amazing experience!  It’s still very much in the works but I am excited to see what comes of this group!  The women who we are working with are amazing on their own and we have a much broader demographic then we had last time which adds an interesting dynamic.  This has the potential to be something really life changing for us and the women we do it with!  One of the things we thought of to do with the group was to buy a large roll of paper to have people write quotes, thoughts, ideas, dreams, keys they gained, etc each week so that by the time we get to the end of the course we have a map of where we’ve come from and how far we’ve traveled.  We’ve been doing it the last two weeks and I am excited to see how it looks at the end!  We’re calling it the Journey Map.  Thus far it has some amazing quotes, thoughts, and drawings.  I’ll be sure to post more as we go.

Story of My Life: An Invitation to be a Princesses

Ladies, did you ever want to be a Disney princess when you grew up?  Belle winning over her Beast and magically transforming his dark castle into a beautiful palace?  Or perhaps Sleeping Beauty awakened by true love’s kiss?  Growing up with four younger brothers my childhood aspirations were a bit less pink and frilly.  I wanted to be a doctor – especially since the first woman ambulance surgeon and one of the first women to go to medical school were both named Emily – or some kind of hero or pioneer.  Soldiers of the World, the less expensive version of G.I. Joes were much more common in our house than Barbies.  They were fun because they had soldiers from multiple eras of history and different countries and we amassed a small multicultural, multigenerational army of them.  In fact we built an entire village for them in our bonus room when we lived in the mountains.  It’s so funny to see how things change as you grow older.  A couple of years ago, through a series of events, my group of friends developed this inside joke that had to do with Disney Princesses.  Of course we each ended up being a different one and we’ve had a lot of fun incorporating princess references into our times hanging out together.  I wanted you to have some background information to understand the significance of the royal envelope that I received in the mail today.  From her castle high in the Colorado mountains overlooking a shining lake during the day and the city lights at night my dear friend Andrea (aka Aurora) issued an invitation to attend a special princess event, complete with costumes, dinner, dessert, and Disney movies.

I have to admit, I loved everything about it.  The invitation, the time it took, the initiative to do something fun and different and break all of us out of our stiff adult boxes, and to get together.  The small glitch in the plan is that I live 30 hours away from them, but my card included a request to Skype in to the party which I will make every effort to do.  I don’t know if I will dress up even though my costume is probably one of the more comfortable and easy ones, I’m not sure if my midriff is ready for that much exposure yet (can you guess who?).  ;)

Who said that being grownups meant that we had to be serious, or take ourselves quite so seriously?  I continue to learn that much of the richness of life is due to the people we spend it with and our ability to relax, be ourselves, and enjoy whatever moment we’re in.  I love having friends who are so free to be themselves that I feel safe to come out and be myself too, even if it involves some puffy pants and a bikini top.  ;)   Ange I wish I could be there for this but I will be loving it from afar and hopefully via Skype!

Story of My Life: A Shapely Meal

I was searching for inspiration to make dinner tonight and I was not getting anywhere.  I have been keeping my grocery supplies on a minimum and it has forced me to eat whatever I have on hand.  That’s a good practice but at times it gets a little bit boring and uninspirational.  I only had frozen chicken that I had cooked previously for meat and I wasn’t feeling rice for another meal.  I started to grab things out of the fridge and I decided to do a meal inspired by a shape, can you guess which one? I basically sauteed a bunch of stuff in olive oil with some spice and a dash of balsamic vinegar.

The final product doesn’t look that amazing but it tasted pretty good.  I chopped up the chicken and tossed it in at the end.  I also made some sort of gravy, I started with the intention of a sauce but it ended up fairly thick.

I even added a side of cranberry sauce, yes straight from the can…circles baby.

Story of My Life: Jessica

Passionate heart.  Wavy black hair.  iPhone.  Thoughtful brown eyes.  Artsy accessories.  Canadian (thought I forget that part sometimes).  These are a few of the things that come to mind when I think of my friend Jessica.  She was in town this last week and stayed in our home while she was here which was delightful.  Jess is one of those people who is deep, thoughtful, and full of wisdom, but is also fun with hilarious stories to tell.  She is someone who is worth taking the time to get to know.  Hopefully you’ll see a little glimpse of her in these quick shots I took right before she left.

Did you catch the twinkle in those brown eyes?

Story of My Life: Me!

This morning I had an interview so I was dressed up and looking my best first thing! After showing I ironed my clothes, poked contacts into my eyes, and then carefully applied my make up, including eye shadow, mascara, and lip color which are all “special occasion” cosmetics for me. I know, mascara and lipstick are not exactly what most people think of as fancy but to a girl who doesn’t wear makeup half the time they are a fun addition. After the interview I was in the South Park area and I decided to drop by our swanky mall while I looked like I could actually buy things there haha!

I had a fun little artist date to Anthropologie (tried on some fun hats) and wandered around a bit before heading home. I decided to take advantage of the light and the make up and take a few self portraits.

I hope you enjoyed getting a closer look at me!
