Story of My Life: Dilworth

This is my friend Sarah Bryan.  If her picture could talk she would say that it’s nice to meet you in her cheerful way and by the twinkle in her eye you might catch a glimpse of the mischievous sense of humor behind her well bred southern manners.  ;)

You may remember Sarah from before, I photographed her jewelry (Aisle14Designs), she was in the first Artist Way group that I did, she’s an amazing artist and interior designer, and we tend to pal around quite a bit.  We are kindred spirits.  As someone told us recent, we are two peas in a pod.  I joked that it was because we’re around the same height and both have dark features and they responded that it was because of a similarity in the way that we operate internally.  There is a lot of truth to that.  We can both be a bit snarky & sarcastic, we both have a love of laughing, cuddling, quality time, good design, good music, and good food.  We also love God, love to worship and pray hard, and love to get into the Word.  The way we operate in the Spirit is much more similar than the way we operate in the outside world.  Sarah and I differ quite a bit in our styles, which is part of the fun of being friends!  Even though we were both born in Georgia, when you get down to it, Sarah is a fairly classic, yet modern, southern young lady where as I am a laid back, slightly hippie westerner.   Yesterday, as you can see, she was wearing a b&w polka dot cardigan over a frilly salmon pink shirt, she also had on dark skinny jeans zipped into tall, black riding boots (which you’ll see later).  I was wearing dark wash bootcut jeans, with short gray slouchy boots (the only ones I have), a predominately blue plaid shirt, an an orange & blue striped scarf, and a brown leather bomber jacket.  But I love how we can both be ourselves, be so different, and yet be so complimentary.  As we start being ourselves it causes so much freedom to be released for other people to be themselves and such a joy in the full expression of our differences that our similarities become more apparent and cherished as well.  I love that!

We went to Dilworth Coffee, in Dilworth of course, to check out their newly renovated space since one of Sarah’s friends recently did the re-design.  I really liked the decor & feel, but the coffee was not my fave, however the light made up for it.

After coffee we decided to risk the rain and brave the gray day and began to walk around the area.  We wandered through the shopping area and then began to wend our way through the quaint neighborhood streets with their bungalows of all shapes and sizes intermingled with huge trees!

A secret garden we found locked away in the courtyard of a modern looking apartment building.

This tree was so amazing!  It was not about to let having it’s top cut off to make room for the power lines cramp it’s style even a little bit.

I became slightly obsessed with puddle reflections while on this walk…there were so many amazing ones to choose from!

There are oh so many comments that I could make for this…two heads are better than one…two peas in a puddle…

I LOVE this house.  We were picking out houses that we would want…Sarah is very much Arts & Crafts style bungalow with a deep porch (with a pale blue roof & rocking chairs), preferably with yellow paint.  Something about this house and the garden I just loved.  Very English Country Garden style, at least that’s what Sarah said, and I believe her…she usually knows about these things.

You know I love everything about this.

Fun peep through!

Apparently you can call the number and find out what happened at that exact spot at some point in history, cool idea!

We discovered this marvelous park!  The perfect spot for a winter picnic we’ve been planning with our little classy party group (you know who you are).

This poor flower bush burst into bloom in the unseasonably warm weather we had last week not realizing that we still have a couple months of winter ahead of us.  It was lovely to see the bright blooms contrasting with the gray sky.

Sarah decided that she wanted a photoshoot in the log pile so she hopped on and started making faces.  ;)

My intrepid explorer friend. :)

There are a few more of my faves here on my photography blog. :)

Story of My Life: Encouragers & Inspirers

Today I had the privilege of hanging out with a woman who I admire a great deal.  Her name is Susan Card and she is an artist.  But she is also so much more than an artist.  She is also a woman on a journey, with a story, who has had a plethora of experience in her life.  In a lot of ways she has been there and done that in the art world.  She is also a woman who is willing to share her wisdom, journey, experience, and plain raw truth as she sees it with others, especially younger others.  It honors me when older women are willing to not just be real, but to be real in such a way that they allow the things they have encountered and experienced to either help, warn, or encourage me in my process.  That is the joy of going through hard things and overcoming, so that you can turn around and spare others from walking through those same things or speed them through it by the authority of your story, your breakthrough, your life.

Susan is someone who will tell you if she likes something or not.  She is not afraid.  I like that and I like her.  The fun thing is, she likes me too!  How awesome is it that someone would tell you that they don’t just love you (although they do) but they like you, for you.  What an encouragement to be yourself!  I was thinking about the fact that there are people who inspire you, whose work you see and admire from a distance.  But then there are those who encourage you, who actually come along side you and put their words and actions with their experience and love and spur you on to what you were made to do.  I think we need both.  I want to be both for other people!  It’s always so encouraging when someone compliments your work and when someone who knows what they are doing praises your work it has so much weight and impact.  It is amazing when someone who inspires you also encourages you!

We all need to be encouraged!!  No matter how good someone seems to be doing or how confident they are, everyone needs and appreciates and desires encouragement.  Give some away today!!

PS I’ve been trying to make an effort to get up early and do fun things with my clothes and hair even if I’m just sitting at home all day by myself working on projects and editing, this was my best attempt and taking a picture of myself.  :)

Story of My Life: Surprises

I did not take any pictures today…oops!  The reason being that my day did not go at all as I had planned.  I went to the chiropractor and then had enough time to slip into the end of Coffee Girls – the coffee and hang out time that the women’s ministry and M* does – which I haven’t been to for quite some time.  It was lovely to see the women and catch up with people!  As I was standing in the lobby chatting with Ginger my friend Nichole came up and invited me to lunch with her and a bunch of other girls and Aliss Cresswell.  Aliss was there visiting and teaching in the 2nd year class of MSU (the ministry school at M*) and she and her friend Sarah, who also works with their ministry, popped out for a bit of lunch with us girls.  I had planned another meeting before  knew about lunch so I could only stay for about half and hour but it was so fun to get to hear their stories and what they are doing.  Aliss and her husband Rob run a cafe and shop in Chester, England and they frequently see people healed and saved and delivered and all kinds of miracles!  They are helping launch businesses that are also churches, where people can come to know Jesus and then come back again and again to be discipled and be part of community.  I think it’s amazing!  (I snitched this picture from their website, you can click on it to be redirected there, that’s Aliss on the right)

Then I got to go help a friend clean and organize their house after some flooding that had happened for a little extra cash which was great!  And they fed me dinner and we watched a movie, also lovely, and all told I didn’t get home until late in the evening!  Definitely a day that didn’t go “according to plan” but turned out so much better than I would have expected or anticipated.  Sometimes things not happening the way I think they should or will go is the best way after all.  At the end of the day, living a life that is flexible enough to enjoy and engage with surprises is the way to truly live an adventure!

Story of My Life: Packaging & Leftovers

Today I worked on a few projects, ran some errands for said projects, came back home and finished one big one and then sped off to the Post Office to mail it just before closing time.  I needed to mail a CD to some of my clients and rather than just hand writing a label and sticking it in an envelope I wanted to upgrade some of the branding I was using.  So I put together a little package which was quite fun!  And who doesn’t love getting things in the mail?!  It’s one of my all time favorite things!

In other news I am very thankful for leftovers.  Cash has been a bit tight recently and I have been happily eating the soup that I made back in December once or twice a week.  It is so nice because it’s easy (I just have to defrost it) and it’s tasty and it’s “free”!  I’m glad that I took the time to package it up and save it.

A word about midnight snacks.  Do you ever eat them?  Growing up the midnight snack that we always ate was milk and cereal.  And we are not just one kind of cereal people, we are mixers.  Bring on the combinations.  Once you’ve been sitting up until all hours of the night talking and dreaming about the crazy ways we’re going to take over the world the only logical thing to do is get up and eat a bowl of cereal together before going to sleep.  :)   Today cereal was more like my late dinner than a midnight snack but it helped me remember those sweet times of late night conspiratorial conversations with my brothers and my mom.  What’s your favorite cereal?  Do you combine?

Story of My Life: A Baby & Golden Light

Today I got to do another newborn photo shoot with a precious little girl named Anna Grace.  What a delightful way to start a morning!  :)

After returning home I started working on moving from one room to another in the same house, which is an interesting experience, and then started on various work projects.  By the time the sun was setting I tore myself away from my desk and took a brisk walk around the block.  It’s so hard not to spend time outside when the weather is so beautiful!

There are profuse beds of clover all over the place.  I love seeing the bright patches of green!

I loved the gradient of dark blue to golden hued cloudless sky!  We truly had a golden hour today.

Story of My Life: “Gormet” Popcorn

Living in Charlotte has really been a “growing up” experience for me.  I not only moved out of my parent’s house but across the country and away from all of my community and immediate family.  I have learned a lot since living here.  And in the midst of the learning I’ve built community and friendships, gotten to know my extended family better, and discovered a lot about myself.  One thing I knew before, from back in the oldest child of a home schooling family, was that I enjoy cooking.  However, it’s a completely different experience to cook for 7+ people than it is to cook for one.  It took me a while to understand that with my grocery shopping hehe.  I’ve also stumbled across things that are fun and yummy that I have learned how to make or experimented (my fave way to cook within reason) since living on my own.  One of those things is popcorn.  It’s funny how something can become your “thing” – well popcorn seems to be my thing.  I realized this when my roommates would beg and bribe me to make it, knowing full well that they could probably make it just as well themselves.  :)   The “recipe” for this popcorn is literally what is found on the back of the bag of popcorn kernels with a few extra spices.  I was making some for a friend and I realized that I’d never photographed the process and figured I might as well share.  Enjoy!

These are some of the ingredients that you can start with…I typically use sea salt, garlic, and pepper with olive oil.  This time I added Parmesan cheese and butter (instead of oil) for the friend I was making this for.  Then you can toss in whatever else sounds good and try it, experiment, have fun!!  (I’ve also made a sweet kind with butter, sugar, cinnamon, and honey.)

Add 1/4th cup of oil to a large pot and turn it on to medium or medium high.

Add just one corn kernel…

Wait until it pops – then you’ll know the oil is hot enough.

Add enough kernels to cover the bottom of the pot, this was a generous allotment.

Very important step – COVER the pot.  Otherwise you will have popped corn flying everywhere!  Cover and gently shake the pot until the popping stops or slows to about 1 second between pops.

Voila!

Transfer the popcorn to a bowl and coat with oil or melted butter (this is what your spices stick to).

Then stir in seasonings to taste!  I’ve realized that I tend to make mine really strongly flavored which people seem to like, but it makes it so that you can’t really eat too much of it and we rarely finish a whole bowl.  But it’s yummy!!

I have learned that you can “air pop” the corn in a brown paper lunch bag (the flat bottomed kind) by putting 1/2 cup of corn kernels in one, folding the top over twice, and microwaving it for 3 – 4 minutes.  You could then add the butter or oil and spices.  It would probably save some time, clean up, and oil use.  I have yet to try it this way, partly because I don’t own paper bags…but I’d like to!

What flavors do you like to add to your pop corn?  I found a recipe (on Pinterest of course) for peppermint bark popcorn that I want to try some time and other mixes and things that you can do.

Cheers to being grown ups!  At least…kinda.  Starter grown ups anyway.  ;)

Story of My Life: Worship Night

Today was another beautiful day!  The only picture I managed to take while on my little walk was this one.  The streets were full of children playing and laughing, birds singing, and people walking and running.  It’s lovely to be in a neighborhood full of people on a day like this when you can see all of the liveliness of life going on around you!

I decided to go to Queen City Church for the first time to a worship night led by Josh Baldwin and Sarah McMillan.  It was SO GOOD!  I love getting to be in corporate worship.  There really is something special about gathering with other people and pressing into the Lord to tell him how good and amazing He is.  We were declaring that he is good, has been good, and will be good during this song.

When I was at my grandparents house the pastor commented that worship is the part of the service where we give something back to God, something of our hearts and our adoration.  Tonight John Mark said that we sing because we want to be known and the Lord sings over us because He wants to be known.  Worship is about relationship.

Story of My Life: Uptown Charlotte & the Lightrail

Today was a beautiful day!  It was supposed to be a high of 64 and sunny.  In January.  I know, crazy right?!  You’d think I’d be used to it after Colorado’s schizophrenic weather but after a few weeks of overcast skies I was in need of more sunshine!  My friend Anastasia and I were talking the other day about saying yes to opportunities to do and try things that we haven’t done before or wouldn’t normally do.  Sometimes we can get tired and lazy and comfortable and want to stay in familiar territory but the kind of life I want to live does not involve staying just inside of the boundaries of the familiar.  So when my friend Calun stopped by on her walk and invited me to come with her and her family to Uptown Charlotte of the light rail I decided to go!  Actually I decided to make banana chocolate chip pancakes and then go.  I’m so glad that I did!  Geoff and Calun treated me and let me tag along with them and their two cuties and we all rode the Charlotte light rail for the first time.  :)   Such an adventure!

This is where we started.

Annabelle is such a ham for the camera, as soon as she sees it she turns on this HUGE grin!

Judah was very excited to be riding the choo choo train!

Our stop near the Epicentre.

These little birds were splashing and playing in the puddle and the drops falling down.

Me & the Judah man. :)

I squatted down to take a picture next to him and he sat right down on my knee and perched as the train went by.

The new location for Not Just Coffee which I was very excited to find at the 7th street light rail stop.

I love that quote! “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

The columns of quotes outside the Library are so great!

Fun stamp sculptures outside of ImaginOn

Annabelle exploring in ImagineOn

Wild mobile, er sculpture, er…cool hanging thing in ImaginOn

Beautiful sunset on the way home. :)

This was very exciting to me because I’ve been wanting to explore Uptown Charlotte more and I realized just how accessible it is and where some sweet things are that I want to go back to!  What is your favorite place in Charlotte, or your city?

Story of My Life: Guitars & Coffee

This morning I had an in house tea date (kinda like a stay-cation…we met at my house) with Nadia, a friend of mine who recently returned from Iris Ministries Harvest School of Missions, a ministry school based in Mozambique, Africa.  Several of my friends have gone through Harvest school and I’m sure that more will as we go forward.  It is Heidi and Rolland Baker’s ministry and people who go there get wrecked, forever.  At least all the ones that I’ve met.  From what I’ve seen of the few people who I’ve interacted with pre- & post-Harvest school it seems to so wreck you for normal life that it will launch you into whatever capacity of a missions calling that you have on your life.  Which is great!  And super hard at the same time.  It’s always exciting to see what the Lord does in those moment of pressing through!  He is good!  I took some pictures of Nadia before she left for the school to help her raise support to go.  I didn’t get one with her as we were hanging out this morning so this will suffice for now. :)

A few days ago I received a text from Lori asking if I taught guitar lessons.  Her daughter Ava got a new guitar for Christmas and wanted to take lessons and she thought of me.  What an honor!  :)   I always feel honored when people want me to teach something to their children, it is such a position of trust and I don’t take it lightly.  However in this case I felt too under qualified even for my normal “fake it till you make it” attitude.  Having not had any formal guitar training myself I knew that I couldn’t give formal training to Ava.  I did tell Lori that I would be glad to hang out with Ava for a bit and show her a couple of chords and let her see if she likes guitar before diving into lessons with someone.  Today I went over to their beautiful home and showed Ava a few basics of chords, strumming, and by the time we were done we were playing a Taylor Swift song together (Long Song for those of you who want to know).  My favorite part is that I think that it helped Ava see that it is hard, but rewarding, work and that guitar is something that she wants to learn!  How fun to get to help start someone onto the path of music!  This experience made me want to acquire more technical knowledge so that I could know it for myself and teach others!  Teaching is so fun!  (Lori took these pictures and shared them with me, thanks Lori!)

Check out that cute little guitar!  It is the perfect size for a young girl and has real strings so she could play and get her fingers callused up for the big leagues when she’s ready.

After hanging out with the Clancys, eating some gluten free snacks, playing some music, and chatting with Lori for a while I was off to another coffee date, this time at…you guessed it, Rush, with my friend Sarah B!  Yes, I have 3 dear friends named Sarah B…she’s Say-ruh though so that makes it different.  :)   It’s always a delight to hang out with this woman and get to catch up on life, laugh, and share some fun moments.  I appreciate friends both who have wisdom and who draw wisdom out of you.

My house-mate and friend Ashley also moved tonight…sadly she left on the busiest day of my entire week!  But we did get to hang out for about an hour in the middle and talk about Queens of England which is a fairly normal topic of conversation with that lovely lady.  :)   I know it won’t be the last we see of her in the QC!

Story of My Life: Creative Community

This evening my friend Anastasia came over to look at Lightroom…two hours later we decided that it was a night of hanging out and not shop talk and we resigned the photog chat to another day.  We have so much fun talking and being together because we have – as we discussed tonight – similar interests but totally different back grounds and cultures.  Isn’t it amazing to see how you can grow up in a totally different way from someone but end up having a lot in common and think the same things are ridiculously awesome and beautiful, or awful and outrageous, or funny?  Ana and her husband Jeremy are awesome, we talked about how they were the emo/punk kids in high school who grew up to be the awesome trendy, creative, hipster couple.  I love it!  She is super creative and is one of those lovely people who is always listening to some cool indie band or reading a sweet blog and actually doing a diy project that she pinned.  I told her that being her friend is educational for me, in a cool way of course.  (We were actually looking at things on her Pinterest, my Facebook, Flickr, and other fun places while hanging out…friendship in the age of technology – though I will say that this moment was preceded by at least an hour of just talking with no computer involved.)

We had a nice chat, some tea & hot chocolate, a couple of these divine flour-less chocolate cookies that she made for our Artist Way party in December and I hoarded and froze to have as treats later, yeah I’m weird like that, they tasted every bit as good warm from the microwave!  I love being friend with people who encourage me to be fully myself and fully creative and passionate about things like typography, good blogs, pretty things, and rad pictures.

Do you surround yourself with people who inspire and encourage you?  Fellow like-hearted ones who spur you on to be who you want to be?  Are you running the race with community?  I love I’m seeing that more and more in my life, it is absolutely worth the investment of time and intentionality to build relationships with people who make you want to be yourself.

Anastasia is also a photographer and blogger, you can see some of her visual goodness on her blog Living In Color.
